When Seniors Refuse Help: How to Approach Home Care Services

Home care services can help a senior loved one age in place and maintain independence.

As experts in home care services, we witness firsthand every day the companionship, joy, and improved quality of life older adults receive through our caregiver services. But we also know that many older adults initially reject the concept of in-home care assistance.

To help overcome a loved one’s oppositions to the care required, it’s important to first understand why they are against help at home. And even though each person will have distinct reasoning to support declining help, some of the typical feelings include:

  • Not wanting a “stranger” in the home
  • A desire to continue to be in control, and not wanting someone to come in and “take over”
  • Fear of lost independence and freedom
  • Feelings of embarrassment or shame about the need to rely on someone else

What Is the Most Common Reason Seniors Refuse Home Care Services?

What may surprise you, though, is the number one concern seniors express about caregiver services: that they won’t know how to entertain the person providing care.

It’s important to listen to the particular concerns your loved one expresses about accepting assistance at home, to acknowledge those feelings, and to provide factual information to help the person better understand the benefits of professional home care services.

For instance, the care professionals at San Diego Home Caregivers are:

  • Skilled at cultivating freedom and independence in older individuals, empowering them to continue to make their own decisions and simply providing support where required
  • Extensively trained and experienced in a broad range of senior caregiving services, including respectful attention to care needs with the dignity each person deserves
  • Carefully paired with a senior based on personality type, likes/dislikes, interests, and more, resulting in a fast bond between both the older adult and caregiver
  • Extensively background checked, screened, bonded and insured, for safety and peace of mind

Partnering with San Diego Home Caregivers for professional in-home care services is the ideal solution for many people who want to continue to live at home throughout aging and prevent the need for moving to a facility. All of our services start with a complimentary in-home meeting, where we take time to listen to any problems and challenges being faced, and to develop a highly individualized care plan to address those needs in a way that helps older adults thrive.

With such benefits as increased safety, reduced risk of falls, hospitalizations and E/R visits, reduced loneliness, and the freedom to go whenever and wherever the senior chooses, seniors have much to gain through engaging the services of our professional care team.
