Urinary Incontinence Myths Debunked: What Seniors Need to Know

in Benefits of Home Care, Chronic Disease, Senior Health
An image of a magnifying glass with the words “myth” and “fact” behind it is a symbol for uncovering urinary incontinence myths.

Understanding incontinence myths and getting the facts helps improve management.

Dealing with urinary incontinence can be extremely awkward and uncomfortable for those affected by it. The stigma surrounding the condition often leads to a lack of information or belief in common misconceptions. Here are a few urinary incontinence myths and the facts you need to know:

Myth: Urinary incontinence is unavoidable as we age.

Truth: While aging can increase the risk of incontinence, many older adults can maintain normal bladder control. It should not be considered a standard or inevitable part of aging.

Myth: Urinary incontinence cannot be treated in older adults.

Truth: This is false in many cases. There are several effective ways to manage and treat incontinence in older adults.

Myth: Drinking less water will reduce the risk of incontinence.

Truth: Seniors often limit their fluid intake, mistakenly believing that drinking less will lessen their incontinence. However, this can lead to concentrated urine, which irritates the bladder and worsens the condition. Drinking adequate fluids helps maintain normal bladder function.

Myth: Urinary incontinence is rarely an issue for men.

Truth: Men are less likely to discuss incontinence with family or doctors and are therefore less frequently diagnosed. However, the National Association for Continence estimates that 20% to 25% of Americans with incontinence are men.

Senior Incontinence: Common Causes and Practical Solutions

in Chronic Disease, Senior Health
A doctor discusses senior incontinence causes and treatments with an elderly female patient.

Senior incontinence is a common but highly treatable condition.

Incontinence, or a reduction in bladder control, is a distressing and sensitive issue, especially for older adults. It can lead to various problems, from skin irritations to social isolation, as individuals may fear leaving home due to the risk of an “accident.” Despite the fact that bladder leakage affects around 25 million people in the U.S., it rarely receives the attention and discussion it deserves. The lack of communication and information about senior incontinence leaves many older adults and their caregivers feeling helpless.

However, senior incontinence is not an inevitable part of aging. While some older adults may experience a “weak” bladder causing leaks, the issue sometimes has a straightforward solution.

Here are some treatable causes of bladder leakage:

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

UTIs, also known as bladder infections, create a strong urge to urinate. While this is easily recognized by younger individuals, it might not be as apparent in older adults. If an older person suddenly experiences urinary incontinence, consider other signs of a UTI, such as:

  • Sudden confusion or agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Behavioral changes
  • Poor motor skills
  • Falls

Additionally, you might notice:

  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Cloudy urine or blood in the urine
  • Fever
  • Pain during urination
  • Pressure or pain in the abdomen
  • Night sweats

If you suspect a loved one has a UTI, they should see a doctor for a urine test. Once treated, the incontinence should improve or resolve.

Mobility Loss

As mobility decreases, incontinence can become an issue. The need to urinate might come suddenly, and the older adult may not reach the bathroom in time. This is particularly problematic at night, as it often takes longer to get out of bed, and waking in the middle of the night can cause confusion.

For those with mobility issues, an in-home assessment from one of our home care experts can provide helpful recommendations.

Medications

Certain medications, such as diuretics, increase urine production, leading to a higher urge to urinate. If an older loved one is taking a medication that increases urine output, it’s important to consider this when planning outings or when they are away from a nearby bathroom.

At San Diego Home Caregivers, we understand the impact of UTIs, senior incontinence, and other elderly health issues on quality of life. Our highly trained senior care team offers a wide range of home care services, including mobility and bathroom assistance, medication reminders, bathing and grooming support, and more, to help an older loved one live their best life.
